The detail
Urethane is what rubber wants to be. It is denser, tougher, and does not degrade the way moulded rubber does — it will not shed, will not develop the chalky bloom that rubber heads get, and holds its shape over years of being dropped on concrete. That is why the warranty here is five years against the Ergo rubber hex dumbbells' three residential.
The tolerance is the other real difference: ±2% against ±3%. On a 50 lb dumbbell that is a pound rather than a pound and a half. Neither is machined-plate accurate, but urethane moulds more consistently than rubber, and a matched pair matters when you are pressing them overhead.
The handle step from 32 mm to 34 mm at 55 lb is the right approach: thinner handles suit light dumbbells where a fat grip feels clumsy, thicker handles spread load across the hand once the weight strains your fingers. Note that both figures are thicker than the 28 mm the rubber hex range uses on its light dumbbells — these are chunkier bars throughout.
Hardened chrome on the handle rather than plain chrome is a small durability win. Handles are where a dumbbell's finish wears through first, and hardened plating lasts longer under chalk.
Medium knurl is right for dumbbells: aggressive knurl on something you hold for sets of twelve tears hands, and smooth chrome under sweat slips.
Bells of Steel does not publish the weight range, individual dimensions, or head construction on this page — the listed options run to 150 lb pairs, but the range is not stated as a spec. Ask for the ladder and whether the heads are welded or bolted before ordering, since that is what decides a fixed dumbbell's lifespan.
