The detail
The dial is the whole product, and it is genuinely faster than the alternatives. A PowerBlock needs a pin pulled and reseated; an Ironmaster needs screws unwound and plates added. This is one twist per end, about a second, and the dumbbell lifts out of its tray at the weight you selected. If you drop-set or superset across weights, that difference compounds across a session.
The cost of the mechanism is what it is made of. BowFlex specifies metal components attaching the plates to the handle, which is the point where cheaper dial dumbbells use plastic and where dial dumbbells generally fail. It is still a mechanism with more moving parts than a screw or a pin, and it is not a dumbbell you drop — that is the honest trade against the Ironmaster, which invites you to.
The trays are not an accessory, they are part of the system. The dial only works when the dumbbell is seated in its tray, so the trays have to be somewhere you can reach — floor level unless you buy the stand, which is sold separately and worth budgeting for.
Fifty-two and a half pounds is the ceiling and it is fixed; there is no expansion kit. That covers presses, rows, curls and accessory work for most people. If you expect to need 70, start with the 1090 instead of replacing these.
Two years of parts warranty is short — against 5 years residential on a PowerBlock and a lifetime on an Ironmaster. On a product whose value is a mechanism, that is the number to weigh.
BowFlex notes that individual weight settings may vary from their stated values due to manufacturing tolerances, without publishing a figure.
