Choose this one if

  • Barbell benching hurts your shoulders and you want to keep pressing
  • You want a specialty bar that still takes a full load of plates
  • You want multiple grip widths from one bar

The detail

The case for a Swiss bar is shoulder position. A straight bar locks your forearms into a fixed rotation at the bottom of a press, and for a lot of people that is where the impingement lives. Neutral and semi-neutral grips let the shoulder sit where it wants to, usually with no loss of training effect — the pecs and triceps do not care which way your palms face.

Multiple grip widths make it more than a one-trick bar. Close grips bias triceps, wider grips bias chest, and the same bar rows well because a neutral grip keeps your elbows tucked without you having to think about it.

The 17.5 inch loadable sleeve is the number that sets this apart from the Arch Nemesis at 13.93. Nearly four extra inches per side is the difference between a bar that runs out of room with three bumpers and one that does not. If you press heavy on a Swiss bar, that is the spec to compare.

At 40 lb it is five pounds under a standard bar, so your loaded totals need adjusting — and the 770 lb capacity is comfortably beyond anything a neutral-grip press will see.

Check the length: 83.375 inches, shorter than a standard 86-inch bar, so it may sit close to your uprights in J-cups spaced for a normal bar. Measure before ordering. That is the same caveat every specialty bar carries and the one most often discovered after delivery.

The 28 mm shaft is thinner than the Arch Nemesis's 32 mm frame, so it feels more like a barbell in the hand and less like a fat bar. Which of those you want is personal; thinner favours grip, thicker favours wrists.
