- You press or row heavier than a 100 lb block covers
- You want a route to 175 lb without replacing the dumbbells
- The dumbbells will see genuinely heavy, frequent use
The detail
The expansion path is the reason to choose this over the Commercial Pro 175. Buy the 125 now, add the kit later, and you land in the same place — with a smaller, lighter block in the meantime. At 17.2 inches long this is nearly four inches shorter than the 175's 21, and on a dumbbell you press near your ribs that difference is noticeable.
One hundred and twenty-five pounds per hand is already beyond what most people will ever dumbbell press. If you are choosing between this and the Pro 100 EXP, the honest question is whether you have actually run out of 100 — because the Pro 100 has finer 2.5 lb increments and a longer residential warranty.
Urethane-coated steel plates with stainless hardware is the commercial specification, and urethane is the right material for something dropped on a rubber floor thousands of times: it does not chip or shed the way painted iron does.
Knurled stainless grips at 38 mm are correct at this weight. Grip is the failure point on a heavy dumbbell, and moulded plastic under a sweaty hand is not enough.
One year of commercial warranty is standard for equipment rated for all-day use and short against the 5-year residential terms on PowerBlock's home models. That difference is about setting rather than build quality.
PowerBlock does not list the weight range or the increment size in the spec table on this page, though it states 16 pairs replaced. Ask for the selectable weight ladder before ordering — on the 175 the steps are 7.5 and 10 lb, and the increment size is what determines whether a set of dumbbells is trainable or just heavy.
