Choose this one if

  • You drop the bar and want a forgiving plate rather than a hard one
  • You are loading moderate weight and sleeve space is not your constraint
  • You want the most widely used bumper in home gyms

The detail

Durometer 88 is the softest plate covered here, and Rogue publishes the scale alongside it so there is no ambiguity: softer means more bounce and more give on landing. That is the correct trade for a general-purpose home bumper, which spends its life being dropped onto a garage floor rather than a competition platform.

The cost of soft rubber is width, and the numbers here are the widest on this site. A 45 lb HG plate is 3.25 inches, against 2.76 for Rogue's own Fleck plates at durometer 90 and 2.15 for the Competition plates at 94. The 55 is 3.75 inches.

Do that arithmetic before you buy. On a 16.4-inch loadable sleeve, five 45 lb HG plates per side fits and a sixth does not — so the practical ceiling on this plate is roughly 495 lb plus the bar, before you resort to change plates. If you squat past that, thinner plates like machined iron or calibrated steel are the answer.

At 450 mm the diameter is the IWF standard, so the bar starts at the right height off the floor. Rogue publishes the width of all six sizes, which is unusually useful and rare.

The 50.40 mm collar opening slides onto any Olympic sleeve without fighting.

Rogue does not publish a weight tolerance, plate material or warranty in the Gear Specs for this listing. All three are worth asking about — tolerance in particular is what separates a training plate from a serious one.

Rogue lists these as not made in the USA.
