The detail
A safety squat bar solves a specific problem: if a straight-bar back squat hurts your shoulders or elbows — old injury, limited external rotation, or long femurs forcing a heavy forward lean — pads and forward handles keep you squatting when nothing else will.
A 16.25-inch loadable sleeve is generous for a padded bar, and it is the number worth comparing. Most specialty bars give you 13 to 14 inches, which runs out fast once you are squatting a real load. This is barbell-class plate space on a bar whose whole point is heavy squatting.
Thirty-eight millimetres is a thick shaft, and it has to be — a padded cambered frame carries the load away from the shaft's axis, so the steel is resisting a bending moment a straight bar never sees.
At 65 lb the bar's own weight is 20 lb over a barbell, which is a large fraction of a light set. This is the most common arithmetic error on any specialty bar; write the number down.
Eighty-nine inches is the dimension to check before ordering. Two and a half inches over a standard bar, and specialty bars routinely turn out not to clear a rack's uprights. Measure from J-cup to the outside of your rack.
