Choose this one if

  • You want a wide pad and plenty of foam under you
  • You want a 1,000 lb rating from a bench with no hinge
  • You want the option of leg extension and leg curl attachments later

The detail

Fourteen inches of pad and 4.3 inches of foam is the widest, thickest bench here, and it is a genuine preference rather than a better number. A wide, deep pad supports more of your back and feels planted; a narrow one — the Bells of Steel flat utility bench at 9.84 inches, or the 12-inch competition standard — lets your shoulder blades retract off the edges and gives a tighter press. If you bench for size and comfort rather than to a rulebook, this is the nicer surface.

Four inches of foam does compress under a heavy press, which is the argument against for a competitive lifter. It also means you can lie on it for twenty minutes of accessory work without your back complaining.

A 1,000 lb rating on 11-gauge steel is what a flat bench should manage. There is no hinge, no ladder and no pop-pin, so the frame is the only limit — the same reason flat benches out-rate adjustable ones across the board.

At 17.7 inches the height is slightly over the competition 17, which suits taller lifters.

The attachment options are the reason to look at this over a plain flat bench. Bells of Steel sells it bare, with a leg extension and leg curl attachment, with a leg roller, or with both — so the bench becomes the base for leg work you would otherwise need a machine for. Decide at order time, because the adapter comes with the bundle.

The warranty splits limited lifetime on the frame and 180 days on wheels and upholstery. On a bench with 4.3 inches of foam, the upholstery is what will go first — a seam under that much compression works hard.
