Choose this one if
- Your grip is the limiting factor on your pulling
- You want to train the way strongman competitions actually test you
- You want one bar that makes everything harder without adding weight
The detail
A 50 mm shaft is nearly twice the diameter of a barbell, and that single change turns every lift on this bar into grip work. You cannot hook grip it — your thumb will not reach — and you cannot close your hand fully around it, so deadlifts, rows and cleans all become limited by how long you can hold on. That is the entire point.
The second, less obvious feature is that the sleeves do not rotate. On an Olympic bar the sleeves spin so the bar can turn under your hands during a clean; on an axle they cannot, so the whole bar has to rotate through your grip. Fringe notes that heavy loads may require a continental clean — resting the bar on your belt and rolling it up — which is a strongman technique and not a defect.
It is the same principle as the fat EZ curl bar applied to the full range of barbell lifts.
At 44 lb it is a pound under a standard bar, so your loaded totals need adjusting slightly. The 1,000 lb capacity is well below a power bar's and beside the point — nobody out-grips 1,000 lb on a 2-inch shaft.
Eighty-four inches is two inches shorter than a standard bar, so it will generally sit in J-cups spaced for a normal bar, closer to the uprights than you are used to. Measure if your rack is tight.
The 15.5-inch sleeve length is generous — genuinely usable rather than the token sleeve most specialty bars carry.
The plain powder coat is the right finish here. Knurl is not the grip mechanism on an axle; the diameter is, and most axles are smooth or lightly textured for exactly that reason.
