Choose this one if
- You drop the bar from overhead regularly
- You want low bounce so the bar stays where it lands
- You want competition construction without competition colours
The detail
Competition bumpers differ from training bumpers in construction rather than appearance: a reinforced steel disc insert that disperses impact across the plate instead of concentrating it at the collar. That is what lets a competition plate survive being dropped from overhead thousands of times, and it is why they cost more.
Low bounce is the other half, and it is a safety feature. A high-bouncing plate throws the bar back at you after a drop, which is exactly when you have missed a lift and stepped away without looking. A low-bounce compound absorbs more of the landing and the bar stays put.
REP is unusually specific about how to make bumpers last, and the advice is worth following: drop the bar as close to straight down as possible, and re-tighten collars mid-session if they loosen. Sideways force on the insert is what kills bumper plates, and a plate landing at an angle is taking all of it.
Two mixing rules matter and REP states both. Do not mix bumpers and iron on the same bar — different diameters mean the larger plate takes all the force — except that change plates alongside bumpers are fine up to 25 lb total, at which point you should swap them for a 25 lb bumper. And the warranty is void if these are mixed with Hi-Temp plates, which have a smaller diameter and would put the whole load on these.
Five years is a strong warranty for a bumper and reflects the competition construction. Compare the Fringe black bumpers, which carry a lifetime term on virgin rubber training plates.
One practical note from REP: unpack them and let them air out for a few days. New rubber smells, and it fades.
