- You want bare-steel knurl feel and will maintain it
- You have 91 inches of clear pulling space
The detail
Twenty-seven millimetres is the thinnest shaft on this site, and it is the whole design. A deadlift bar is meant to flex: as you pull, the bar bends before the plates leave the floor, so you start moving from a slightly higher hip position and the pull feels smoother. At 27 mm with 170,000 PSI steel over nearly 91 inches, this bends more than most.
The thin shaft has a second effect that people underrate: it is easier to grip. Two millimetres off a 29 mm power bar is a meaningful difference in how far your fingers wrap, and grip is what ends most heavy deadlift sets.
That same whip is exactly wrong under a squat. Do not buy this as a general bar. The Powerlifting Bar at 29 mm and 210,000 PSI is the stiff one.
Bare steel is the finish, and it is a commitment. It gives the best raw knurl feel available and it will rust if you let it. Bells of Steel documents the maintenance for its bare-steel bars — Simple Green and a BBQ brush. In a humid garage, budget for that or buy a coated bar.
Aggressive knurl with powerlifting marks and no centre knurl is the correct deadlift specification: grip where it matters, nothing scraping your thighs on the way up.
The 1,000 lb capacity is the lowest of the serious bars here, well under the 2,000 lb on the PRX Reef and Titan's Elite power bar. On a bar designed to flex that is consistent rather than alarming — but it is a real ceiling if you pull in the 700s.
At 91 inches long, measure your space. A deadlift bar is not racked, but it needs room.
