Choose this one if
- The pad gap is the thing that has stopped you buying an adjustable bench
- You want decline on both the back and the seat, not just the back
- You can store it upright, which cuts its floor footprint by two thirds
The detail
The seat slides forward and back to eliminate the gap between seat and back pad in every position. That is the pitch, and it addresses the exact compromise REP's own AB-3000 makes with its 2.1 inch gap and the AB-5200 narrows to 1.4. Here the answer is a mechanism rather than a smaller number.
Twelve back angles is the most on this site, beating the AB-5200's ten and the Ironmaster's eleven, and the -8 degree decline is built in rather than an attachment. The seat also declines to -10, which is unusual — most benches adjust the back and leave the seat flat, and a declining seat is what stops you sliding down the pad on decline presses.
At 17.2 inches the pad height is right in the competition range, so feet stay flat on the floor for most people.
Then read the weight: 131 lb, the heaviest bench here. The AB-3000 is 89 and the Ironmaster is 69. That is the cost of a sliding seat mechanism and a 10.7 square foot footprint — this is not a bench you move between sessions.
The mitigation is vertical storage, which drops the footprint to 3.1 square feet — under a third. If your gym has to convert back into a garage, tipping this upright against a wall is the intended workflow, and the front handle exists for exactly that.
